What: For the duration of the Festival the Vespasius amphitheatre becomes one of the largest cinemas in the world (it has a capacity of 5,000 to 8,000 seats). The film festival has been held since 1954 (first as the Festival of Yugoslavian feature film, then in 1992 as the Festival of Croatian film.) In 2001 the Pula Film Festival took on an international character and became the festival of Croatian and European film.

What: An international music and drama festival with classical music concerts, soloist concerts, operas, operettas, ballets and drama performances. Official opening takes place with a concert performance of Slovenia’s Philharmonic Orchestra and Maksim Mrvica. The venues are equally breathtaking, ranging from the old Roman Arena to the picturesque island of Brijuni. Performances usually start 9pm or 9.30pm.

What: Dance the night away on the Girandella beach, drink cocktails and maybe even have a night swim to the soothing sounds of techno, house and disco. Festival kicks off with a smaller-scale party, while the main event stretches across two days, with all-night partying on the beach followed by an after party-until 4pm the next day. Five different dance floors are set up and an international cast of DJs plays everything from techno and house through to rock/pop and disco.
Where: Split, Croatia Cost: Various What: Every year since 1954, Split Summer Festival has taken over the historic city centre, entertaining the crowds with exhibitions, opera, concerts, dance and street theatre. Combines traditional and contemporary culture, both Croatian and European, with performances by national and international artists. Highlights of this year's festival include: opera performances of Bellini's Norma and Verdi's Nabucco; theatrical performances of Gabriel García Márquez' No One Writes to the Colonel, Tennessee Williams' Night of the Iguana and Tolstoy's Anna Karenina. Special guests are the world-famous Russian Kirov ballet.

Cost: K50-K120; last day free What:Presented in three picturesque towns on the northern Istria penninsula. Hosts some of the world's best jazz musicians and dancers. Has grown from a local into an international event. This year's line-up features appearances by world famous New York composer and musician John Zorn with Acoustic Masada and the amazing Whirling Dervishes from Istanbul's Temple of Galata Mevlevi

What: Town of Kastav hosts concert performances and exhibitions in Lokvina Square and St Helen's Church in the centre of town. Festival is divided into three parts to cover all aspects of the arts: 1) Classical concerts from both domestic and international musicians. 2) Croatian theatrical performances. 3) Visual arts exhibitions held in cooperation with the Italian institution Le Venezie. Festival also hosts the international guitar festival which features distinguished guitarists from around the country and abroad performing a wide variety of musical genres.

What: A ten-day Street Art Festival for all ages and tastes. Features street theatre, clowns, acrobats, jugglers, music and dance performances, pantomime, and artistic projects. Also presents free outdoor workshops on the streets squares of the town.
