SPLIT GRAPHIC 2005
When:1 Sep - 1 Dec 2005 (biennial)
Where: Diocletian's Palace, Split, Croatia
What: Splitgraphic is an international graphic art exhibition, held in Split every other year. It offers the public the chance to compare and contrast a wide selection of prints produced by artists from around the world. This year's edition, subtitled "Dialogue", showcases the work of 20 artists in a series of ten exhibitions.
HUMAN RIGHTS FILM FESTIVAL
When:9 - 14 Dec 2005 (annual)
Where: Student Centre, Zagreb, Croatia
What: The Human Rights Film Festival, offers an insight into new works in world cinema that are dedicated to human rights subjects. In addition to film screenings, the festival features discussions, lectures, exhibitions and presentations by independent film producers.
STERLING CUP DUBROVNIK NEW YEAR'S REGATTA
When: 28 Dec 2005 - 2 Jan 2006(annual)
Where:Dubrovnik, Croatia
Cost: Entrance fee US$250 per boat
What:The first annual Sterling Cup Dubrovnik New Year's Regatta is open to club yachts or charter boats. It takes place in the waters around Dubrovnik, combining the competitive scoring of Olympic Round-the-Cans course with the enjoyment of coastal passage races to surrounding islands. Awards up to K10,000 and cruising holidays are reserved for the winners.
INTERNATIONAL CARNIVAL OF RIJEKA
When: 17 Jan - 21 Feb 2007 (annual)
Where:Rijeka, Croatia
Cost: Free
What:Annual event that has a 100-year-old tradition. Vibe is mixture of bourgeois carnival and ancient Slav mythology. Concerts, exhibitions, parties, performances lead up to the main event - the International Carnival Parade - Hundreds of floats, thousands of masks and streets crowded with spectators. Customs include the making of "ugly masks", which scare away evil forces, calling the spring and celebrating the birth of new life. The Zvoncari, or local bell ringers, are identical to those who centuries ago protected their land from Turkish invasion.
ZAGREB - SPRINGTIME JAZZ FEVER 2006
When: 19 March - 31 March 2007
Where: Zagreb, Croatia
What: An annual international club festival of Jazz music; a series of concerts at a Zagreb Jazz club (B.P. Club) by international and domestic Jazz artists.
The festival is associated with the European Jazz Festival association.
ZAGREB FAIR - GASTRONOMY & TOURISM DAYS
When: 17 - 21 April 2007
Where: Zagreb, Croatia
What: A group of fairs comprising the already existing fairs that include: Agriculture, Gastronomy, Food and Drink, Wine and the Equipment for Viniculture and Viticulture - VINOVITA, Tourism, Hunting and fishing and an International Home and Garden Fair.
DUBROVNIK INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
When: Oct 2007 ( 5th annual)
Where: Dubrovnik, Croatia
What: Small, low key but beautiful. Festival offers a mixed bag of indie, art house and world movies. Sidebar events include competitions for documentaries and short films. As far as Croatia events go, this is one to look out for in the future.
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF NEW FILM
When: 15 -22 Sept 2007 (annual)
Where: Split, Croatia
What: Held at various venues around Split, including the Multi-medial Cultural Centre and the Zlatna vrata Film Library. Festival supports experimental new and radical creations of all genres and durations. Entries are preferably from outside the mainstream and are accepted regardless of whether they were made on a shoestring budget or as a studio release, involving traditional film techniques or the latest technology. Includes internet projects, performances, retrospectives, workshops and round tables for both professionals and enthusiasts. Best works are awarded a Grand Prix (for each category) and cash awards. Held since 1996 and is a member of the European Co-ordination of Film Festivals.
INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S FESTIVAL
When: Jun - Jul 2006 (annual)
Where: Sibenik, Croatia
Cost: Free - Various
What: Renaissance town of Sibenik hosts an international festival encouraging children's creativity. Presented in venues across town, in squares and on the streets. Running successfully since 1958. Includes puppeteers, film creators, actors, poets and musicians from around the country and abroad. Offers workshop programmes and provides many children with their first experience of the arts and all their possibilities.
