Hvar

Good Food, Good Wine & Good Fun!

THE ISLAND OF HVAR

By Owen Lipsett

Combining the best aspects of Italy, the Greek Islands, and of course Croatia itself, it’s no surprise that the Island of Hvar is the most popular (and most chic) resort among Croatians themselves. It’s blessed with such good weather year-round that many hotel owners offer discounts (or sometimes full refunds) in case of rain!

There’s much more to this Croatian island than beautiful people and beautiful landscapes, in the ports of Stari Grad and Hvar Town it also boast two of Croatia’s most charming and historic settlements.

Hvar’s lowlands have produced fine wines and olives for thousands of years, while wild lavender turns much of the island purple in the spring, combining with rosemary to make its air smell like a herbalist’s shop.

Easily reached by ferry or catamaran from Split, Hvar seems to concentrate all that’s best about Croatia’s islands – boasting among other thing’s Croatia’s oldest town, Europe oldest public theater, and the world’s oldest tourism society!

Hvar Town: The Citadel overlooking Hvar Town is the best place to begin any exploration for two reasons. First, it affords an unparalleled view of the town, its harbor, and the surrounding countryside. Second, the zigzagging path uphill to the Citadel is completely exposed to the sun, making it a somewhat hot climb even on the coldest winter morning. To read more, CLICK HERE!

Stari Grad (Old Town): “Stari Grad” literally means “Old Town” in Croatian and considering that it’s the most ancient continuously inhabited settlement in Croatia, this is fitting. Founded by Ionian Greeks from Syracuse at the foot of a deep, mile-long bay that today shares its name in 385 BC, it was also adjacent to fertile farmland, with the result that it quickly became agriculturally self-sufficient.To read more, CLICK HERE!
