Plitvice Lakes
“Land of Falling Lakes”
PLITVICE LAKES NATIONAL PARK (Plitvicka Jezera)is located in a deep mysterious ancient forest known as the "Devil's Garden" halfway between Zagreb and Zadar. It is an enchanting world of cascading lakes, subterranean caverns and breathtaking waterfalls which is home to deer, bears, wolves, boars and rare bird species. The oldest national park in Europe, Plitvice Lakes National Park was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979. Composed of 16 interconnected lakes, the climate at the national park is alpine yet the water temperature in summer can reach 24°C.
Hours: The National Park is open daily all year round, with longer opening hours during summer (usually 8am to 7pm). From November till the end of March Plitvice Lakes National Park is covered with snow freezing the lakes between December and January creating a magical winter wonderland.
Entrance Fee: 6 Euros in November - April; 10 Euros in May & June and September & October; 12 Euros in July & August. Fee includes the use of shuttle bus and electric boat within the chosen tour and the parking of your car or bus.
Food: In addition to the hotels you’ll find wonderful picnic spots located within the park with decent food stands. *Dogs are allowed but must be on a leash.
GETTING THERE The closest airport to Plitvice Lakes is at Zagreb which is about 140km away. It takes about 2.5 hours by bus from Zagreb to get to Plitivice Lakes and 4 hours from Split. Approximately 30 buses pass to/from Zagreb/South Croatia daily.
ACCOMMODATION Hotels: The Park runs two of the main hotels—Hotel Jezero and Hotel Plitvice. There is also Hotel Grabovac which is located 12km north of the Park. All these hotels serve fine, affordable meals. More >>>
Camping: There’s a campsite (Korana) which contains 42 “bungalows” or space for 550 camping units which is located about 6km outside of the northern entrance of the Park. The "bungalows" are double bed wooden huts with a table and chairs (the beds are separated and equipped with linen); the guests use showers/WC within the camping facility.
Private accommodation can be found in a number of the nearby towns and villages.
